Harvard ex-president Summers Steps Down from AI Company's Directors

Board Resignation
The economist stated he would step back from public roles after Congressional panel made public his repeated correspondence with Epstein

One-time economic leader Lawrence Summers is departing from the directorate at the artificial intelligence firm, just days after a series of electronic messages between him and notorious criminal the disgraced billionaire became public.

Summers remarked in a statement that he was "appreciative for the privilege to have contributed, optimistic about the potential of the organization, and anticipate observing their advancement".

Summers, who once presided over the prestigious university, declared on recently that he would be scaling back from public roles due to his relationship with Epstein.

Digital Correspondence

The freshly disclosed emails revealed that Summers communicated with Epstein until the day before Epstein's 2019 arrest for alleged sex trafficking of underage individuals.

In another announcement, the AI firm stated it understood the economist's choice to resign.

"We appreciate his significant contributions and the perspective he offered to the directors," the organization commented.

Political Context

This development arrives after both chambers of Congress voted on Tuesday to endorse a measure that would require the US justice department to release its documents on Jeffrey Epstein.

The legislation will subsequently proceed to the desk of President Trump for signature. The President has indicated he expects to endorse the bill, after reversing his view on the issue following pushback from his followers.

Correspondence Findings

A collection of financier-linked messages released by the Congressional committee last week included numerous high-profile figures in the billionaire's former circle, without suggesting any criminal activity by those individuals.

The messages showed that the economist and Jeffrey Epstein regularly had dinners together, with he often attempting to introduce Summers to prominent global figures.

Individual Statement

After the correspondence were made available with the public, the former official stated he took "total ownership for my ill-advised judgment to persist in corresponding with Jeffrey Epstein".

He added that he desired "to rebuild trust and mend connections with the individuals closest to me".

Professional History

Summers held high-level positions under party leaders; acting as economic leader under the former president, and as director of the economic advisory body under President Obama.

He headed the university from the early 2000s and is still a professor there. When stating his withdrawal from public duties previously on this week, he said he would continue his academic responsibilities.

Additional Consequences

Following his announcement on earlier this week, the Washington think tank, a progressive think tank in DC where he was a senior fellow, announced that he was not connected with the organization.

He joined the directorate of the technology firm, which develops ChatGPT, in the previous year - following a failed attempt to remove its chief executive the company leader.
