Edwards and O'Neil are two of the early names under consideration to succeed Vitor Pereira as manager of Wolverhampton Wanderers.
Pereira was dismissed on Sunday after the squad's 10-match without a victory start to the top-flight season.
And both candidates - both of who have previous associations to the club - are among the names to be evaluated by the club leadership.
Edwards is presently at Middlesbrough, which would create a potential hurdle to his hiring at Wolves' stadium.
Nevertheless the ex- Luton Town manager - who made over a century of games for Wolves during his time as a player - is said to be a strong candidate for the position.
The mid-career manager is said to have backing from the Wolves directors as they start the process of appointing a new head coach.
Gary O'Neil is also appearing as a unexpected contender, although he would be a shock appointment considering he was released by the club in December last year.
The ex- West Ham midfielder is out of work meaning the club would not be required to pay any compensation.
