Three members of law enforcement were killed and more than a dozen others were hurt in what appears to be deliberate detonation from gas at a rural property in the northern part of Italy.

Sequence of Events

The blast was triggered as officers and emergency crews went into the residence near the Verona region to carry out an removal notice for three siblings who were older adults.

The three victims who died belonged to the Carabinieri military police.

Legal Proceedings

A man and a woman were arrested at the location and another man who fled after the incident was located shortly later. The trio have been taken to hospital.

The blast could be heard approximately 5 kilometers away and images from the scene displayed the structure turned into a heap of debris.

“This moment calls for sorrow,” commented the Interior Minister Minister Piantedosi, who mentioned that attempts had been made to displace the three siblings in the earlier times.

Property Situation

The head of the region of Veneto, Luca Zaia, explained the farmhouse was facing an removal notice due to financial obligations incurred by the three owners.

Negotiators had been assigned to talk with the family members who had secured themselves into the house. When the Carabinieri arrived soon after 03:00 (01:00 GMT), investigators believe a family member triggered the explosion.

“As we went inside, we encountered a completely deranged action,” provincial police commander Commander Papagno informed reporters.

A gas canister had been activated, and the explosion precisely impacted our officers,” he said.

Petrol bombs were also located at the property, the interior minister confirmed.

Casualties and Damage

Injured individuals by the blast consisted of 11 other members of the police force as well as three members of national police and a fire services member.

Based on information from the local prosecutor, the farmhouse was in a poor condition and had lacked electrical service.

He thought the blast had occurred on a floor above the entrance and informed the press it was a “deliberate and pre-planned murder”. Just prior to the incident, he mentioned members had “heard a whistle, probably the propane tanks being activated”.

Community Reaction

“We all knew the situation was dire,” local residents stated to reporters, mentioning that the trio had earlier warned to “cause an explosion” rather than leave the house.

“The explosion had left a ‘terrible, very painful and dramatic toll’.”

Minister of Defence Minister Crosetto united with other government officials in paying tribute to the trio of personnel who had lost their lives in the line of duty.
