Air Travel Restarts at Edinburgh Airport Following Substantial ATC System Failure

An IT issue at the airport's air traffic control meant no planes could enter or leave the airport.

Air travel have restarted at Scotland's primary international airport following a major air traffic control outage brought the international hub to a standstill.

All incoming and outgoing flights were halted due to an systems problem that was reported at approximately 08:30.

Some passengers were left waiting in aircraft on the tarmac as the outage continued.

Services Recommence with Residual Impact

A statement indicated at 10:40 that flights had resumed, and expressed gratitude to passengers for their "patience and understanding".

That said, significant disruption are expected to affect schedules. Flights to London Gatwick, Bristol, Amsterdam and Frankfurt have been cancelled, with numerous other services subject to postponements.

An airport representative had initially projected that a significant number of movements could be affected.

"Passengers are advised to check directly with their airline for the current status on their specific flights," the statement added.

Root of the Disruption

The problem was traced to the operational halt to an IT issue with its air traffic control provider.

Travelers continue to be advised to check the status of their journey before traveling to the airport as backlogs are managed.
